Meet CFPF athlete Tyson Durbin!
Tyson has been a member of CrossFit Post Falls since April, 2015. Although mainly training for powerlifting, he’s made tremendous improvements recently while focusing on CrossFit.
Could you tell me a little more about what got you started? What brought you in? Was there a specific moment that you remember deciding “I need to do this”?
I got started about 6 years ago, and have been in and out with seasons of life, finances, and injuries. What brought me back and the moment I decided “I need this” was the reflection on the progress and sense of community that continues to motivate and hold me accountable for my health and fitness goals.
What were the initial feelings like coming that first time? How did that change after a week and a month?
I remember feeling embarrassed. Embarrassed for letting my physical health go so much, and I knew what I was capable of doing from my history with fitness. So coming in and being humbled 6 years ago, I felt embarrassed. The biggest change for me wasn’t because I got stronger, or faster, or more in shape. What changed for me was my maturity and growth, mentally. I let go of my ego, had grace with myself, stopped being my own barrier, and just let myself learn and make mistakes. I’ve learned that there is no “easy” workout. CrossFit empowers you to push yourself every single day, no matter if you’re a beginner or RX+. Humility and allowing myself to make mistakes has formed me into a much better athlete, far beyond any PR.
What are you most proud of so far?
Currently, I’m most proud of my balance. I feel like I’m really extending beyond being a strength athlete and making some moves on the board with my cardio and times. I feel like I’m becoming much more well-rounded, and healing injuries in a much more intelligent manner.
What are you going to do next? Any goals on the horizon?
My primary goal is to achieve a qualifying total for nationals in powerlifting. With that goal, I’m focusing on maintaining my functional strength, agility, and speed. This go, I’m not rushing any of the processes. I’m taking it one day at a time, trusting my body, and continuing to push myself mentally, listening to my body, and maintaining focus on training both inside the gym and outside of it.
How has life changed outside of the gym as a result of joining?
Happiness. I’m happy when I’m healthy. My mental health is on point, because CrossFit is my therapy.
What is your “why”? Has it changed since joining?
My “Why” is my children. I want to be present and active for them for their entire lives. I want to beat the lazy lifestyle. I want to be a present grandfather that goes skiing, competes in competitions, and maintains a healthy lifestyle. This has not changed since joining.
What would you say to someone who thinks they can’t do what you are doing? (CrossFit)
Shut up (and then tell my story, and the focus on overcoming negative belief of self and facing fear or discomfort within themselves mentally and physically).
